Aaron knew without a doubt that this was Odette St Claire,but there was no time to think about the circumstances that had brought them together. The beast at the girl’s side halted at the edge of a clearing. Before Aaron could do anything except stare down at the barbaric scene in stunned silence,a giant, yellowish-brown, tusked cat bounded into the small clearing with another roar. The giant saber-toothed tiger made a powerful swipe with one gigantic paw, sending the great wolf spinning through the air,before it continued its pursuit of the young girl. Before Aaron’s horrified eyes, he saw Odette St. Claire trip and fall.

She let out a ragged scream, breaking through Aaron’s shocked trance. He moved forward on his unsteady perch, looking for some way he could help the girl. He pulled his gun from its holster, but he doubted that even it would stop the beast before it could reach the terrified Odette.

He would never know whether or not the gun would have been effective,because he didn’t see the vine in which his foot tangled. With a startled yelp, he felt his balance deserting him, and he tumbled sideways, off the high limb,directly into the path of the bounding saber-tooth!
