Excerpt:

The referee’s voice picked up the count, and with each stroke Danny could hear the words drumming in his mind: “You cops ain’t so tough without a gun, Donovan!

“Get up, punk!” Cardona yelled. “I’m not through pounding on you yet. Get up and take it, damn you!”

Danny got one knee under him and one glove on the ropes, pulling himself up just before the count of ten by Calvin, the tall, broad-shouldered referee.

“You should have stayed down, you young fool!” the black man snapped.

Leather smothered him as the referee moved away and Cardona advanced. Danny clinched, but the thick-chested Italian wrestled out of it savagely. Pain exploded like an atomic bomb in the pit of Donovan’s stomach. A long hook lanced through his guard as if it had been paper. His head unhinged. The canvas began spinning faster and faster until it tilted up and slapped him in the face. There was a vision of dynamite exploding in a mine, and then Danny knew no more.

REVIEWS:

What a HOOT it was! Great plots & sub-plots and the characters were right-on! And, there is a History Lesson as well for all of us whom were there, even if we do not remember it all.

Thanks so much for the dedication—Dad would have loved this book. Best in all your endeavors.

Have just finished the book. Got a kick out of it and became quite fond of some of the characters. Sgt. Tanner was a deep one. I also liked Donovan. Something about the Irish! The bit about the Foreign Legion and the Americans in the bar was particularly funny. As was the pink flamingo episode. Your descriptions of Rainwater were hilarious

The book is an easy read.  Enjoyed the mention of the 599th playing the Panthers, that is a true event as we played them a few times.  I think I have a pic of the belly dancer somewhere.

The cover looks beautiful. Of course the Cold War means something to me, as I grew up with it in Europe.

It really brings back memories.  I can tell right away that my buddies in high school and your MP group had a lot in common!

“Cold War Heroes” was interesting. Those Poitiers MP guys seemed to live on cognac.

In the 1960s, a squad of U.S. Army MPs in France goes through a number of hi-jinks during a boxing tournament on Post. Danny Donovan is fighting for the unit, but a tough cook is beating everyone that goes up against him. To make things worse, no one likes the cooks because of the food they serve. Now, the unit of misfits get tangled up with black marketers and spies to make their jobs even harder. Could the Cold War in Europe be about to heat up?

I never served in the military, and barely remember M*A*S*H* on television, but I was fascinated by the promo of this book, and requested a copy from the author to Review. As the publisher wrote on the back cover, “We are treated to an inside look at Army life with a touch of humor by a soldier who actually experienced it.” The old adage of “if something can go wrong, it probably will,” we find quite true in this tale about a bunch of soldiers forgotten by their Headquarters command, and left to their own devices. That they get into a little trouble is to be expected, but they manage to survive for a new day and another problem. Somehow, we know they will win the Cold War despite the stumbling blocks. Though the story is fiction, the MP unit, and the base actually existed. There are pictures of the base and several of the author’s award certificates in the back of the book to give authenticity to the story. There is some language in the book, but it is used as humor instead of shock value, not something today’s writers can easily accomplish.

I highly recommend this book for everyone who served during the Cold War, and their families. Even someone who never wore a uniform will find this story a light-hearted look at military life in the 1960s. If you’ve forgotten the Cold War, here is your chance to get an inside peek once again.

COLD WAR HEROES by Tom Johnson:  The merry misfits of the 202nd Military Police Company in France have their priorities straight:  drinking French cognac and chasing French women.  In between they have to deal with spies, the black market, and an on Post boxing tournament that may be too much for their hero.  Think M*A*S*H – a decade later, different country, different unit,  but as Radar would say over the public address system, “Follow the adventures of those good old boys from home as they fight to keep the world safe one bottle and broad at a time.”
