Where would Alexandra make her New Beginning? Now or Then?
These nights were much too short, Alex complained to herself and stretched. A glance at the bedside clock verified her thought; it was only 6:30. She pulled the blanket around her shoulders hoping to doze off. When the light touch came, she, at first, thought the blanket had slipped down. Something brushed her shoulder again and she froze. No! Alex knew what it had to be. Leave me alone! Why was this happening? Slowly, she rolled over. Although she saw nothing, the feeling of a presence in the room was strong. She slid out of bed and into her robe. Walking to the window she felt no fear as her eyes made out not one, but two hazy “somethings” now on the outside of the glass.
Up to this point she had been unharmed by whatever these were. Remembering something Claire had said to her and feeling a complete fool, Alex squared her shoulders then drew a deep breath and confronted the mist. “Look here,” she spoke very softly. “I don’t know what you want of me but if you would just give me a sign, I could do whatever it is and you could be at rest. I only want you to allow me to get on with my life.” She maintained her composure with much difficulty, not taking her eyes from the window. A subtle shift in the haze revealed two very faint figures, one clad in the ubiquitous brown dress. Her companion appeared to be a bearded man garbed in a well-worn and stained kilt and a wicked looking broad sword slung over one shoulder. It was more a sense than sight but Alex knew that the man grinned a familiar wide smile as the two apparitions appeared to raise hands in farewell. They were gone.
